SYNOPSIS
“Atmaja (Born Within)” is a poignant Bengali film directed by Nabyendu Chatterjee. Sujata, a school teacher, struggles to raise her two sons — Ajay and Bijay — on her own after her husband falls ill and becomes unemployed.
Ajay gets drawn into politics, driven by a desire to change society, only to become a victim of political violence. Meanwhile, Bijay leaves home in search of success and eventually builds a life disconnected from his roots. After Sujata’s husband dies, she clings to memories of Ajay for solace.
Years later, when Sujata moves in with Bijay, she finds herself alienated from his modern, emotionless lifestyle. Though Bijay feels inner conflict, he lacks the strength to change. In this emotional void, Sujata meets Bidyut — a young man who echoes Ajay’s ideals — reigniting her lost faith in humanity.
In a symbolic dream, Sujata envisions herself as a midwife giving birth to revolution — cradling millions like Ajay and Bidyut. It becomes a metaphor for the soul’s resilience and the promise of renewal.
